American Studies 10 — The Dark City: American Urbanism and its Discontents
(No longer taking applications.)
Seeking one (1) Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) for The Dark City, a course that introduces students to an interdisciplinary approach to seeing and interpreting American histories and cultures, as revealed through an examination of the “dark” note in the story of the American city.
GSI will be responsible for 1-2 sections per week, plus other duties, which includes but is not limited to:
-Lecture attendance
-Readings
-1-2 hours of office hours per week
-Record keeping
-Reading and grading assignments and exams
-Occasional consultation meetings with the instructor
Qualifications: An ideal candidate will demonstrate familiarity with interdisciplinary subjects that span the humanities and the social sciences. While the candidate is not expected to contribute prior knowledge or expertise about the course topic, some comfort with this range of cultural materials and/or with the subject matter is helpful, as course media will include journalism, poetry, photography, cartoons, films, architectural drawings, and city plans. We will also give attention to material, urban spaces, including New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
A strong preference will be given to candidates with a working knowledge of geographic methods, historical methods (e.g. archival research), anthropology, art history, and/or criticism of literature or film, or with working knowledge of professional fields such as architecture, city planning, and landscape architecture. Prior teaching experience is not required, but is welcome.

Readers will be responsible for evaluating, assigning grades, and providing feedback for course assignments and exams.
Qualifications: No prior knowledge of specific course subject matter is required. However, ideal candidates will demonstrate familiarity with interdisciplinary approaches to the study of American culture and society, particularly those spanning the humanities and social sciences. Preference will be given to candidates with relevant coursework, research experience, and/or familiarity with methods and approaches commonly employed in American Studies, including historical, cultural, social, and critical analysis.

Qualifications: No prior knowledge of the subject matter is required, however, an ideal candidate will demonstrate familiarity with the interdisciplinary subjects that span the humanities and the social sciences. Strong preference will be given to candidates with working knowledge and/or experience with U.S. history (19th century preferred), historical methods (such as archival research) and/or material culture methodologies.
